Elm Counselling offers professional counselling for when life feels overwhelming.
At Elm Counselling, my mission is to provide a safe, compassionate, and non-judgmental space where individuals can explore their experiences, reconnect with their sense of self, and find healing at their own pace. Rooted in a humanistic and trauma-informed approach, I integrate different theories and techniques to meet each client’s unique needs.
I aim to support people in understanding their stories, developing self-awareness, and building self-worth — empowering them to move towards greater emotional wellbeing, resilience, and authenticity in their lives through effective mental health support.
Hello, I’m Emma — a qualified counsellor and Registered Member of the BACP, based in Barnstaple, North Devon. I offer a warm, compassionate and down-to-earth space where you can talk openly and begin to make sense of what’s happening for you.
I hold a Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (Humanistic-Integrative) and am currently completing a Level 5 Diploma in Trauma-Informed Counselling, expanding my expertise in working safely and effectively with trauma.
Alongside my private practice, I volunteer with a domestic abuse charity supporting adults experiencing challenges such as trauma, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and relationship difficulties. These experiences have strengthened my belief that healing begins when we feel truly heard, understood, and accepted without judgement.
Before becoming a counsellor, I spent 10 years working within family and criminal law supporting individuals through complex and often distressing circumstances. This background gives me a deep understanding of how life events, relationships, and systems can impact our emotional wellbeing.

I offer face to face sessions from my counselling room at my home in Landkey, Barnstaple or online sessions UK wide.
I offer a free 30-minute exploratory phone call. This gives us a chance to get to know each other a little, talk about the reasons you’re considering counselling, and see whether I feel like the right fit for you. You can then decide if you’d like to book a first session.

Anxiety can show up in many ways — racing thoughts, constant worry, restlessness, or a sense of being on edge. It can feel exhausting trying to manage it alone. I offer a gentle, understanding space where you can explore what’s driving your anxiety and learn ways to calm and ground yourself. Together, we’ll work towards reducing overwhelm, building emotional resilience, and helping you regain a sense of control and ease in daily life.
Living with depression can feel heavy and isolating, making even small daily tasks feel overwhelming. In our sessions, I offer a compassionate, non-judgemental space to explore what you’re experiencing and what may be contributing to these feelings. Together, we can work towards understanding your emotions, rediscovering hope, and finding gentle steps to help you reconnect with yourself and the things that bring meaning and balance back into your life.
Experiencing trauma can leave lasting effects on how we see ourselves, others, and the world around us. In our sessions, I offer a calm and supportive space where you can begin to make sense of your experiences safely and at your own pace. Working together, we can explore how trauma may be showing up in your life today, gently rebuild a sense of safety and trust, and support you in reconnecting with your self-worth and inner strength.
Stress can build up gradually, leaving you feeling tense, overwhelmed, or disconnected from yourself. In counselling, I offer a calm and supportive space to pause and make sense of what’s happening beneath the surface. Together, we can explore the pressures you’re facing, understand how they’re affecting your wellbeing, and find healthy ways to restore balance and calm — helping you feel more in control and better equipped to manage life’s demands.
I offer a supportive and understanding space for neurodivergent clients and for family members seeking to better understand and navigate neurodiversity. Whether you or your loved one are living with autism, ADHD, or other neurodivergent traits, counselling can help explore the challenges, strengths, and emotions that come with these experiences. Together, we can work towards self-acceptance, improved communication, and finding practical ways to support wellbeing within everyday life.
